Two Types of Ranges:

  • Gas Ranges
  • Electric Ranges

Common Issues with Gas Ranges

  • My gas range doesn’t work at all.
  • The top burner of my gas range doesn’t work.
  • My gas range doesn’t bake.
  • My gas range doesn’t broil.

UGH! My Gas Range Doesn’t Work At All!

  1. No Power

You should confirm there is power getting to your over gas range, oven or cook top. Try checking for a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker. Also, try checking the wall socket for power with a voltmeter.

My Top Burner Doesn’t Work.

Oftentimes the issue comes down to a dirty or clogged burner. You must make sure your burner is clean. If you have a pilotless model, then your range uses a spark igniter to ignite gas. It works with a combination of a spark switch and a spark module. There are not simple tests to find out what is faulty. We recommend contacting a professional appliance technician to diagnose it.

My Range Doesn’t Bake.

  1. Bake Igniter

If your range has a burnt-out bake igniter, it will not bake. If you don’t see a glowing igniter, it’s most likely burnt out. If the igniter glows red not white or bright yellow, it is most likely weak. If that happens, the safety valve won’t open to let the gas out into the oven burner. Contact a professional appliance technician to replace the defective igniter.

Please note: A defective igniter is the most common reason, but there are others such as a defective selector switch, defective thermostat, or defective gas safety valve.

My Range Doesn’t Broil.

  1. Broil Igniter

If your range has a burnt-out broil igniter, it will not broil. If you don’t see a glowing igniter, it’s most likely burnt out. If the igniter glows red not white or bright yellow, it is most likely weak. If that happens, the safety valve won’t open to let the gas out into the oven burner. Contact a professional appliance technician to replace the defective igniter.

Please note: A defective igniter is the most common reason, but there are others such as

  • defective selector switch
  • defective thermostat
  • defective gas safety valve.

Common Issues with Electric Ranges

  • My gas range doesn’t work at all.
  • The top burner of my gas range doesn’t work.
  • My gas range doesn’t bake.
  • My gas range doesn’t broil.

Help! My Electric Range Doesn’t Work At All!

  1. No Power

You should confirm there is power getting to your over gas range, oven or cook top. Try checking for a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker. Also, try checking the wall socket for power with a voltmeter. It’s possible for the power cord to disconnect or burn at the appliance. If that happens, the terminal block or the wiring might need to be fixed or replaced by a professional.

The Top Element of My Electric Range Doesn’t Work.

  1. The Top Element

Understand that if element works intermittently or if it doesn’t get red hot at the highest setting, then your range may have a burned-out receptacle. Contact a professional to diagnose your range to if you need to replace the element and the receptacle.

  1. Infinite Switch

The 2nd reason as to why your element will not operate it due to a fault infinite switch. Contact a professional to diagnose the issue and replace it if the switch is found to be faulty.
